Cheltenham 2021 Members bets Review
There is no getting away from the fact that the members advice for Cheltenham was not good enough. Winners were few and literally far between, with hindsight, thirty plus advised bets was too much. It’s always nice to have the Gold Cup winner and Minella Indo (WON 9/1) was the highlight among too many lows.
I’ve spent most of the time since the final race re-watching the races and going through the bets as part of my review. We did have some bad luck along the way, which is to be expected, but there were far more poor decisions than hard-luck stories. After getting off to a winning start with Appreciate It being easy enough to find, Happygolucky found too good (the most exposed runner in the field) but picking Goshen for the Champion Hurdle was a shocking choice. Suggesting Minella Melody at 33/1 was a fair call before the race as she went off at 12’s, although she failed to run to form, but throwing three darts at the Boodles was another bad idea. Fortunately, Galvin ensured some return from the last. Wednesday was a mixture of bad picks and bad luck, the Grand Annual was a kick-in-the-teeth, with the ‘saver’ Embittered falling and virtually bringing down the main bet Zanza. Day three saw us hit-the-bar three times: The Bosses Oscar, Fakir D’oudaries and Sire Du Berlais all finishing as runner-up. The Gold Cup winner on the last day was a welcome relief before ending the day with Galopin Des Champs winning the finale and ensuring some “damage limitation” on the week.
I doubt that it is any consolation but at a personal level it was my worst Festival financially for over a decade. As well as the advised bets, I decided on a big each-way with Acradabras in the Champion Hurdle at 8/1 four places, which was over after the third flight. I tried to do the same stake with Quilixios at 9/2, but the bet was declined, and I opted not to take the 11/4…you know the rest.
